In a tense moment during Sunday’s 21-7 win over the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered an injury to his right ankle. Despite leaving the field in the fourth quarter, Mahomes’ injury was not as serious as it initially appeared, and Chiefs fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Head coach Andy Reid confirmed after the game that the injury was not a break, although Mahomes was clearly in pain.
Mahomes Leaves the Game After Injury
The injury occurred late in the fourth quarter as Mahomes scrambled out of the pocket to make a play. “I was trying to run out of the pocket, obviously, fourth down, trying to make a play happen,” Mahomes said after the game. “As I threw the ball, I got hit. I haven’t seen it, but someone probably hit me from behind, and I just got rolled up on.”
Although Mahomes was in visible discomfort, Reid reassured fans that the injury wasn’t as bad as it seemed. “It’s not broken, but it’s sore,” Reid said. “He’ll get started on the rehab part of it and then we’ll just have to see how he does down the road here.”
Mahomes Wants to Keep Playing Despite Pain
In true Mahomes fashion, the star quarterback was eager to return to the game despite the injury. Reid revealed that Mahomes “wanted to fight about” going back into the game, showing his fierce determination. “He’s a tough kid,” Reid added, noting that Mahomes could have likely returned if needed. However, the Chiefs decided it was best to keep him out for the rest of the game to avoid further damage.
Mahomes himself reflected on his feelings after leaving the game, admitting that he was unsure of his exact condition right after the injury due to the adrenaline. “Usually, the day after you get a good sense of it,” Mahomes explained. “But I feel like I could have finished the game in different circumstances.”
Chiefs Keep Their Focus on AFC’s No. 1 Seed
Despite the injury scare, Mahomes remained focused on the big picture: securing a top spot in the AFC. The Chiefs are aiming for the No. 1 seed, which would grant them a first-round bye in the playoffs and an extra week to rest. The team’s 13-1 record puts them in prime position to achieve that goal.
With Mahomes on the sidelines, the Chiefs didn’t miss a beat, cruising to a 21-7 victory over the Browns. The win not only kept their playoff hopes alive but also kept them firmly in the race for the AFC’s top seed.
Family Support for Patrick Mahomes
Even after the injury, Mahomes was not alone. His wife, Brittany Mahomes, was by his side on the sidelines. The couple shared a sweet pregame kiss, and Brittany was there to support her husband throughout the game. The two have two young children: daughter Sterling Skye, 3, and son Patrick “Bronze” Lavon Mahomes III, 2. They also recently announced that they are expecting their third child, a baby girl, adding even more joy to their growing family.
Looking Ahead to the Playoffs
As Mahomes begins his rehab, the Chiefs’ playoff journey is just beginning. They’ve already clinched a playoff spot, but the focus now is on securing the No. 1 seed in the AFC. If Mahomes can recover quickly, the Chiefs will be ready to make a deep playoff run, aiming for their third straight Super Bowl appearance.
